Every section works as a day trip, Beijing's hotel selection is vastly better, and you keep the rest of your itinerary simple. The overnight-at-the-wall options below are for specific goals — sunrise photography, a slow pace, or escaping the city.

Best Beijing neighborhoods by section

Your hotel's location matters less than its proximity to your morning departure point. Match them:

For Mutianyu:

• Dongzhimen — Mu Bus departs from Dongzhimen (Exit B1) at 8:00/10:00, and bus 916 leaves from here too. Staying nearby turns a stressful morning into a stroll.
• Wangfujing / Dengshikou — Zan Bus departs from the Regent Beijing area (Dengshikou Exit C).

For Badaling:

• Xizhimen / Beijing North station area — high-speed rail to Badaling departs from Beijing North and Qinghe. A hotel near Xizhimen puts you minutes from the platform.
• Deshengmen area — useful if you're taking bus 877 (though verify the 2026 departure point — reports say it moved to Beitucheng).

For Jinshanling:

• Wangjing West area — near the reported weekend public bus departure (unconfirmed; verify on arrival).
• Otherwise, stay anywhere central and join a tour with hotel pickup — honestly the simplest Jinshanling play.

General rule: the Dongcheng and Xicheng districts put you within reach of everything and keep the rest of your Beijing sightseeing easy.

Staying at the wall: when it's worth it

Mutianyu village stays. A cluster of guesthouses and small hotels sits at the wall's base — convenient, reasonably priced, and the only way to be first through the gate. Worth it if you want a crowd-free first hour or a relaxed two-day pace. Book on Trip.com or Booking.com; quality varies, so read recent reviews.

Jinshanling farmhouse stays. Simple guesthouses near the wall — basic but well-reviewed by hikers. This is the move for sunrise/sunset photography, the Jinshanling signature experience that's impossible as a day trip. Arrange dinner and your return transport with the host when you book.

Badaling overnight? Skip it. Badaling's value is speed and ease as a day trip; there's no sunrise experience worth the logistics.

• Book refundable rates in the shoulder seasons — weather can force a rest day, and Mutianyu officially closes in storms and high winds.
• Confirm pickup logistics if you're on a tour: most small-group tours offer hotel pickup within central Beijing but charge extra (or decline) for far-flung hotels.
